Cosmelan Depigmentation Peel

Treatment for Facial Pigmentation and Brown Spots

Cosmelan Depigmentation™ Treatment for Facial Brown Spots

Brown spots, patchy skin, uneven complexion and irregular pigmentation - all difficult-to-resolve skin problems with a wide variety of causes. Because there is a need to consistently treat and protect skin that has a tendency to overproduce pigment, you will need to stay on a skin lightening and protective regimen.

The Cosmelan Advantage

Dr. Cobos' In-Office Cosmelan "Kick Start"

Cosmelan's first point in desirability is it's initial fast action. Your first in-office treatment with Dr. Cobos "kick-starts" the process with a power-packed skin lightening mask. Cosmelan's synergistic ingredients work very quickly, resulting in a fast, effective blending and reduction of undesirable brown patches and uneven skin.

Long Term Control with At-Home Cosmelan Pack.

Establishing a good base level is important in your long-term control of hyperpigmentation. Dr. Cobos uses Cosmelan® as the treatment of choice because it is a powerful skin rejuvenation treatment for particularly stubborn and dense pigmentation that is safely used long-term. An at-home program further improves and maintains desired results.

Cosmelan can be used indefinitely because the ingredients do not pose the same risks as long-term hydroquinone use. Your skin will reach a leveling-off point after a number of weeks on the program and you can expect to maintain correction with consistent use of the treatment products and sun protection.

(This is important. If you only use your system until your skin looks better, and then stop, you will have "pigmentation rebound" and end up where you started.)

Understanding the potential of skin lightening productsAlthough the effects are usually dramatic, often it is impossible to completely eliminate all undesired pigment. Part of the reason is the intense sun exposure in Southern California, which is the "on" button for anyone with pigmentation issues. Sun, added to high-pigment skin, (which is the case for anyone with ethnic backgrounds from Asia, Latin America and the Middle East) equals a much higher incidence of unwanted pigmentation.

Because skin lightening systems "suppress" melanin production and do not eliminate it, you will always be at risk of some or all pigmentation returning if you stop using your products or increase your exposure to heat and sun.

How Cosmelan works

Cosmelan regulates the melanin activity, causing the melanocytes (pigment producing cells) to slow down over-production and function in a more uniform way. This is the "suppression" factor and the reason Cosmelan is effective.

Cosmelan is “sun-friendly”, an especially appreciated factor for our California lifestyle, and works well even on the darker tones of Asian, Latin American and Middle Eastern skin. Cosmelan will also produce a slight initial “peel” which lightly refinishes the skin surface while dramatically diminishing hyper-pigmentation.

Cosmelan Depigmentation treatment action mechanism is based on the inhibition of tyrosinase, a basic enzyme in the melanin formation process. Several of the substances present in the Cosmelan formula act by blocking this enzyme.

Cosmelan F.A.Q.s

Where do the "brown patches" come from?

The brown color in your skin is produced by melanin, the natural pigment that also determines eye and hair color. However, if too much melanin is produced in one area, the result is brown patches on your skin ( hyper-pigmentation.)

Sun exposure is a key component of this problem. Exposure occurs all the time - through your car window, a walk outside, playing sports, through the windows at your office or home. Heat can also produce a pigmentation explosion. Work that involves hot or steamy environments, working outside in hot weather, and even spending time cooking can all "turn on" your pigment-producing cells.

Dr. Cobos is especially aware of the negative psychological effect excess pigmentation has on women in particular. Hyper-pigmentation is very difficult to conceal, even with heavy makeup or camouflage creams. As a proven system, Cosmelan has been a huge boost in helping minimize brown patches and brown spots that before were resistant to other methods or products

What are the types of Hyper-Pigmentation?

Melasma or Chloasma : Skin coloration that appears as blotchy brown spots, often covering cheeks, forehead, or temples. This type of hyper-pigmentation can be hereditary, or triggered by hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause. Taking birth control pills can also trigger Melasma. In addition, some laser treatments such as IPL, may worsen the condition.

Age Spots or "Liver" Spots : Smaller darkened patches usually on older adults who have been exposed to the sun for many years. These spots can be seen on the face, forearms and backs of hands.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation caused by Acne

Post-inflammatory Hyper-Pigmentation : This type of hyper-pigmentation results from any inflammatory injury or trauma to the skin.

Some causes of post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation :

  • Acne – particularly cysts or nodules – often leaves dark discoloration after a blemish heals. Persisten cystic acne can be controlled with Photodynamic Therapy
  • Poorly administered chemical peels, incorrect methods of laser hair removal, or laser surgery can leave behind hyper-pigmentation.
  • Rashes like psoriasis and eczema often darken the skin as well. Even seemingly innocuous things like leg waxing and electrolysis can cause the melanin cells to over react.
  • Prolonged exposure to heat, whether from being in the sun or working over heat-producing appliances will also be a potential cause.

Extra Measures for Treating Hyperpigmentation

From time to time additional measures are incorporated to further the results. In some cases GentleMax Photofacial or chemical peels may be used as an adjunctive in reducing sun damage-related pigmentation.

In some cases, Fraxel may be the best option for your skin problems. Dr. Cobos will discuss all the treatment options and how one may be more suitable than the other for your skin condition and lifestyle.
